Douglas

JOPLIN, Mo. — Freeman Health System announces Dwight Douglas as first General Counsel for the health system. Douglas will begin his new position on May 11, 2009, as a full-time Freeman employee.

In this new role, he will provide legal services to Freeman Health System. Douglas has represented Freeman for the last eight years as Corporate Counsel and serves currently as President of the Missouri Society of Health Care Attorneys.

Douglas will close his Neosho law office on May 8, 2009, after 40 years of practicing law in Neosho. Dwight Douglas' father, Herbert Douglas, first opened a law office on the Neosho square in 1937. In 1957, Herbert Douglas started the law firm of Douglas and Douglas, whose members at the time were Herbert Douglas and Garland Douglas. Dwight Douglas joined the firm in 1968.

"A Douglas has been practicing law in Neosho continuously for the last 72 years, and I will always be grateful for the loyalty and support of my clients and this community," Douglas said.

In addition to the practice of law, Douglas serves as the part-time Neosho Municipal Judge, a position he has held since 1976. Douglas has informed the City of Neosho that he will resign as Judge effective May 12, 2009. Douglas has presided over thousands of municipal cases in his 33 years on the bench.

Douglas has been active in many volunteer organizations including service on the Boards of the Crowder College Foundation, Missouri Southern State University, Missouri State University, Missouri Environmental Improvement and Energy Resources Authority, and the Missouri Safe Drinking Water Commission. He received the Book of Golden Deeds Award from both the Neosho and Joplin Exchange Clubs. Douglas served on the Governor’s Task Force on Dioxin and received an Environmental Protection Agency Partnership Award for his volunteer service at a Superfund site. He is currently a member of the Neosho Rotary Club and First Christian Church.
