| JOPLIN, Mo. — Freeman Health System will unveil a new 3,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art, medical education center at 1031 McIntosh Circle Drive during a March 31 invitation-only grand opening and ribbon cutting ceremony slated to begin at 5:30 p.m.
As recognition for their special gift to Freeman Health System and their commitment to quality medical education by Drs. Larry and Kent McIntire, and their families, the new facility has been named the McIntire Medical Education Center. "With a strong commitment to osteopathic medical education, Freeman Health System provides a tertiary referral center offering outstanding clinical experience, a faculty of more than 70 teaching physicians, and administrative support to provide top quality medical education," said Gary Duncan, president and chief executive officer of Freeman Health System.
The McIntire Medicare Education Center will serve as the medical education home for residents in Freeman's three residency programs: ear, nose, and throat medicine; emergency medicine; and internal medicine. Freeman is the only teaching hospital with residency programs in the four-state area.
The center features a fully equipped human simulation laboratory, computer lab, private study areas, library with online access, conference room with state-of-the-art audio-visual capability to allow interactive video conferences with other teaching hospitals, staff lounge, staff offices, electronic security for after hours access for residents and medical students, and an automated resource directory for public access. One piece of new technology in the center, the human-simulation lab, features a $65,000 mannequin programmed with specific medical scenarios that responds to treatment prescribed by medical students. An instructor later reviews video recordings of the sessions with students. This human simulation lab was made possible through a generous leading gift from George Fauvergue. More than $600,000 was raised to make this center a reality thanks to the generosity of major contributors Dr. Gene and Mrs. Judy Langevin, Dr. Kyle Kennedy, Dr. Ki Boan, and their families, the Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences, as well as many members of the Freeman medical staff. "The McIntire Medical Education Center compliments the outstanding clinical experience available at Freeman and provides the type of medical education facility to continue to attract, educate, and retain new physicians to benefit our community," Duncan added.
