SAN MATEO, Calif., and JOPLIN, Mo. — Con-way Inc. (NYSE: CNW) announced June 18 the second enterprise- wide class to be enrolled in the ALPHA development program, a three year curriculum for selected employees that provides training and education to prepare participants for potential future opportunities in executive management.

"Con-way would not be the strong, progressive company it is today without the expertise and exemplary skills of our employees – and the extensive training that helps them be most effective for our customers," said Douglas W. Stotlar, president and CEO.

Among the 11 employees selected for the 2008 class are two from the Joplin office:
Billy Cartright – director, recruiting, Con-way Truckload
Troy Robertson – associate general counsel, Con-way Truckload

ALPHA, which stands for Advanced Leadership Preparation for Highest Achievement, is designed to ensure that future leaders of Con-way are prepared to take on the highest level of responsibility when the opportunity arises.

Participants are nominated by their business units and, based on an extensive interview and evaluation process, are selected from throughout the enterprise by Stotlar and his executive committee.

The three-year executive education curriculum – the highest level of training and development offered within the Con-way Leadership Academy – provides in-depth education and training through workshops, symposiums and other modules specifically designed to develop leadership and executive management skills.

"The ALPHA program is the pinnacle of our investment in our most valuable asset – our people. We want to ensure that employees are not only able to meet the challenges of their current positions, but are always preparing to take the next step," Stotlar said. "As they are successful, so too will Con-way continue to grow and remain a formidable competitor in this industry."
