Strategy Organization GSD Group recently announced its latest project on building Atari-themed Hotels in some parts of the United States. Atari is a very well-known brand in the gaming world. In January, GSD confirmed that they had received the green signal to go for the video game-themed Atari Hotels in the U.S. Further, they updated that the first franchises of the hotels would be in Phoenix, Arizona, and Las Vegas. GSD also has plans to extend the branches to Austin, Chicago, Denver, San Francisco, San Jose, and Seattle.

The Grand Opening

The developers have not mentioned a fixed timeline yet. The Phoenix project was expected to begin in mid-2020. However, due to the global coronavirus pandemic, all construction work has come to a halt. Thus, the timeline has been pushed further. This obstacle has not stopped GSD, though, as they still see potential in this project.

Features of the Atari Hotels

According to the CEO of GSD, Shelly Murphy, infusing the nostalgic 1980s Atari brand in hotels in a crowd-pleaser and a crowd-puller. She gave due credit for this idea to Apple’s co-founder, Steve Wozniak. Reportedly, he was one of the original employees of Atari. Further, Murphy mentioned that a site had not been chosen yet for the Arizona location. They were initially going to lock down a plot downtown but realized that there wasn’t sufficient room there to implement their plans. Murphy went on to confirm that the video game complex attached to the hotel will not only feature Atari but also games from every kind of company. It will include:

  • Retro-style gaming arcades
  • Pop-culture-themed bars and restaurants
  • State of the art esports multiplex
  • Multi-purpose gaming arena
  • Experiential and immersive entertainment

The Gaming Industry during the Pandemic

If one industry experienced a boom during the world-wide lockdown, it was the gaming industry. The world had come to a stand-still. Since content production was slow, people had no other source of entertainment to turn to. Thus, there was a tremendous rise in the global video games market this year. By 2027, the market is expected to grow to $293 billion. Many other industries are trying to implement such fusions, including an apartment with an esports lounge in Las Vegas.
