Corpus Christi ISD is hosting a High School Expo on Wednesday to showcase the many career and technical programs available across the district. The event, which is open to seventh through ninth graders, will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Carroll High School cafeteria.

According to Bryan Davis of the CCISD College, Career and Military Readiness Office, the goal of the expo is to raise awareness of the various opportunities available to students. “Sometimes, students aren’t aware of all the options that are out there for them,” he said. “This event will give them a chance to explore the programs and see what interests them.”

The expo will feature a variety of programs, including drones, dental science, maritime, construction management, health care, agriculture, law enforcement, and culinary arts. These programs are housed at different high school campuses across the district, and students can apply to transfer and take advantage of them.

During the event, families will have the opportunity to speak with teachers and current students in each program to get a firsthand perspective on what to expect. Freshmen who are considering changing programs are encouraged to attend, as are families from other area districts and the community.

The career and technical programs are elective classes that are taken in addition to the core classes required for graduation. Most programs take three years to complete, with students choosing a pathway before or during their freshman year. However, students can still explore and take classes from a program even after that point, but might not be able to complete every class in the program of study.

“We want to make sure that all of our district students can benefit from these programs,” said Davis. “We’re not just encouraging our students to transfer, but we want them to find something that they like and that is meaningful.”
